I Bought an iPhone Duo — Now What?
The box arrives.
You open it.
Beautiful phone.
Very expensive phone.
And then you turn it on.
Suddenly you’re looking at a screen asking you questions you’ve never seen before.
You think:
“What do I do now?”
Don’t worry.
You don’t have to complete everything in five minutes.
Keep Your Old iPhone
This is the first thing I’d tell anyone.
Do not erase your old phone yet.
Keep it nearby.
Your old iPhone may contain years of photographs, contacts, messages, notes, applications, and account information.
Know Your Apple Account
Before transferring anything, make sure you know the credentials for your Apple Account.
Apple says your Apple Account is used to sign in to Apple services and that you may need the associated email address or phone number and password during setup.
If you don’t remember the password, don’t panic.
And don’t give it to a stranger.
Use Apple’s official recovery process.
Transfer Your Information
Apple supports Quick Start, which can help move information from your previous iPhone to the new device.
Keep the old and new phones together and follow the instructions carefully.
Don’t Rush
You have waited for your new phone.
There’s no reason to rush through setup.
Read the screen.
Understand what you’re approving.
Take your time when the phone asks about accounts, privacy, payments, security, or data.
Then Check Your Important Things
Before you consider the setup finished, check:
Photos
Contacts
Messages
Notes
Calendar
Important apps
Phone calls
Don’t just look at the home screen and assume everything transferred.
Something Doesn’t Look Right?
This is where people often get frustrated.
Maybe your photos aren’t all there yet.
Maybe an app needs to download.
Maybe you’re being asked for an Apple Account password.
Maybe your old information doesn’t look the way you’re used to seeing it.
Don’t immediately reset the phone.
Don’t start deleting things.
Don’t panic.
Get a human to help you understand what you’re seeing.
