HP Printer Says Offline But It’s Connected to Wi-Fi
This is one of those technology problems that makes absolutely no sense.
Your HP printer says it’s connected to Wi-Fi.
Your computer has internet.
Your printer is turned on.
And yet your computer says:
“Printer Offline”
You’re probably thinking:
“What do you mean offline? I can see the printer!”
We understand.
Why Can This Happen?
Your printer being connected to Wi-Fi and your computer being able to communicate with the printer are related, but they aren’t exactly the same thing.
A printer can appear connected while the computer has an outdated or incorrect printer connection.
You may also have:
- An old printer entry
- A second printer with a similar name
- A changed network
- A Windows printer configuration problem
- A connection problem between the computer and printer
First, Look at the Printer
Check the printer display.
Does it say:
Ready
Connected
Offline
Network problem
or something else?
Write down the exact message.
That little piece of information can be very helpful.
Check Your Computer’s Wi-Fi
Make sure the computer is connected to the Wi-Fi network you expect it to use.
For example:
Your HP printer may be on:
HomeNetwork
while the computer is accidentally connected to:
HomeNetwork-Guest
That can create communication problems.
What If the Printer Worked Yesterday?
Think about what changed.
Did you:
- Restart the router?
- Get a new router?
- Change the Wi-Fi password?
- Update Windows?
- Move the printer?
- Lose power?
Sometimes the problem starts after a seemingly unrelated change.
Don’t Delete the Printer Immediately
You may find instructions online telling you to remove the printer and add it again.
Sometimes that works.
But if the problem is actually your network connection, removing the printer won’t solve the underlying issue.
And then you may have two problems instead of one.
Stuck on “Printer Offline”?
Stop clicking random settings.
Call a real person.
