- An outdated iOS or iPadOS version
- Storage running close to full
- A single misbehaving app rather than the whole device
- Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings that need a reset
- An aging battery that needs to be checked
Step-by-Step Fix
Force restart your device
On newer iPhones: press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Check for a software update
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install anything available. Many bugs are fixed in routine updates.
Check your storage
Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If you're close to full, delete unused apps or offload large photo/video backups to iCloud.
Force-quit the problem app
Swipe up from the bottom (or double-click the Home button on older models) and swipe the app away, then reopen it.
Reset network settings
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This fixes most Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues (you'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords).
Check battery health
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If maximum capacity is well below 80%, that explains rapid battery drain.
Reset all settings (keeps your data)
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This resets preferences without deleting photos, apps, or messages.
Back up before anything major
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, or connect to a computer, before attempting any deeper fix.
Use Recovery Mode for stubborn issues
If the device is frozen or stuck, connect it to a computer, open Finder (or iTunes on older Windows PCs), and follow the Recovery Mode steps for your model.
Still Not Fixed?
If you're locked out with a forgotten passcode, or your device won't turn on at all, don't keep trying repeatedly — repeated failed passcode attempts can trigger a full erase. Get help before that happens.
