Word, Excel, or Outlook Not Working? Try This First
Whether Office won't open, keeps crashing, or Outlook has stopped sending and receiving mail, most of these issues come down to a handful of common causes — and most can be fixed without reinstalling anything.

- A corrupted Office installation or missing update
- A misbehaving add-in loading automatically on startup
- An expired or disconnected Microsoft 365 login
- A damaged Outlook data file or corrupted user profile
- Conflicting antivirus software blocking Office processes
Step-by-Step Fix
Restart the app and your PC
It sounds obvious, but a full restart clears out temporary glitches in Office's background processes.
Check your Microsoft 365 sign-in
Open any Office app, go to File > Account, and confirm you're signed in with the right account and your subscription is active.
Update Office
In any Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. Let it finish and restart the app.
Run a Quick Repair
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, find Microsoft Office, click Change, then choose Quick Repair.
Run an Online Repair if Quick Repair doesn't help
Same menu as above — this time choose Online Repair. It takes longer but fixes deeper installation issues.
Disable Office add-ins
In Word or Outlook, go to File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins > Go, then uncheck everything and restart. Re-enable one at a time to find the culprit.
Create a new Outlook profile
If Outlook specifically is the problem, go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add, then set the new profile as default.
Check your antivirus settings
Some antivirus tools block Office from connecting to Microsoft's servers. Temporarily disable it to see if that's the cause.
Reinstall Office as a last resort
Uninstall completely from Control Panel, restart your PC, then reinstall from your Microsoft account at office.com.
Still Not Fixed?
If Outlook is missing emails, showing sync errors, or Office won't activate no matter what you try, it's worth having someone check your account and settings directly — especially if this is for a business email account.
